SUSE LINUX Professional 9.3
SUSE LINUX termasuk distro yang paling dihormati sebagai penyedia solusi dan teknologi unggul di dunia sistem operasi open source. Distro asal Jerman ini memiliki tim developer terbesar di dunia yang telah banyak berjasa mengangkat nama SUSE sebagai solusi Linux paling lengkap saat ini. Pada tahun 2003, SUSE LINUX resmi diakuisisi oleh Novell, Inc.
SUSE Linux Professional (SLP) 9.3 adalah sebuah distro sistem operasi desktop yang mengundang decak kagum saat dicoba. Distro ini memiliki semua aplikasi Linux yang kemungkinan besar dibutuhkan oleh semua orang. Berbagai aplikasi itu kemudian disajikan dengan pilihan antarmuka KDE Atau GNOME yang terbaru.
Yang perlu diingat adalah sejak awal adalah SUSE LINUX punya reputasi sebagai distro yang bukan diperuntukkan buat pengguna awam. Jadi, jangan mengharapkan distro ini akan semudah Xandros atau Linspire. Tidak perlu takut untuk mencobanya mengingat lengkapnya dokumentasi yang tersedia untuk distro ini, hanya saja distro ini mungkin lebih tepat untuk developer, seorang power user, atau seseorang yang tertarik untuk mencoba sampai sejauh mana desktop Linux dapat digunakan.
Sebagai distro Linux high-end, SLP 9.3 dapat dijalankan di Pentium berkecepatan rendah dengan memory minimal 128MB dan ruang harddisk 500MB. Tentu saja yang disarankan adalah prosesor minimum Pentium 1GHz, memory 256MB, dan harddisk 2,5GB.
Feature dan Aplikasi
Walaupun instalasi SLP 9.3 jelas tidak semudah distro Linux untuk pemula, akan dianggap mudah oleh mereka yang sudah memiliki pengalaman meng-install Linux. Memakan waktu sekitar satu jam, setelah terinstall SLP 9.3 akan beroperasi sempurna.
SLP 9.3 dibangun di atas kernel Linux 2.6.11 dan pilihan untuk menggunakan KDE 3.4. atau GNOME 2.10. Distro ini juga dilengkapi software terkini di dunia desktop Linux, seperti browser Firefox 1.01, klien groupware Novell Evolution 2.2.1, dan Adobe Reader 7.
Sebagai tambahan distro ini menyertakan OpenOffice.org 2.0 Beta; klien VoIP Linphone; kompabilitas dengan iPod; dan aplikasi manajemen foto F-Spot, program open source sejenis Picasa 2 dari Google. Mereka yang mencari alternatif bisa menemukan browser Epiphany 1.6 dan opera 7.54, serta pengolah teks AbiWord 2.2.4.
Para developer dapat dipuaskan dengan berbagai aplikasi untuk membuat program dalam bahasa C, C++, Java, Mono, Perl, Phyton dan banyak bahasa lainnya. SLP 9.3 juga sudah dilengkapi dengan program virtualisasi Xen 2.05 yang sangat berguna bila developer ingin menguji programnya dalam berbagai skenario lingkungan sistem.
Update dan instalasi program baru difasilitasi dua aplikasi khas SUSE. Yang pertama SuSE Watcher, yang secara otomatis memantau tersedianya update atau software baru. Setelah pengguna memilih update atau aplikasi yang ingin diinstall, Suse Watcher akan menjalankan aplikasi administrasi YaST, yang akan melanjutkan instalasi update atau aplikasi itu.
SLP 9.3 jadi pilihan tepat bagi Anda yang mencari desktop Linux canggih. Distro ini dapat Anda miliki dengan membeli lima keping CD Instalasinya seharga sekitar US$100. Lho kok bayar ? ya karena SLP 9.3 memang bukan sistem operasi gratis. Bagi mereka yang penasaran ingin mencoba mungkin harus puas dengan Live Evaluation CD dari SUSE.
Media on SuSE Linux
This is a basic guide for playing media like mp3, avi, mpg etc. i.e., any mpeg layer format, and real media for SuSE 9.3 and higher.
First of all, ensure that you have the following packages installed:
xine-lib, xine-ui, kaffeine, amarok, and above all gcc i.e., the GNU C Compiler.
These packages can be installed from the installation CDs/DVD from here:
Applications -> System -> Yast -> Software Management
Then modify your LD_LIBRARY_PATH by doing this:
* Open terminal / konsole
* Type "su -" and hit enter, then type the root's password.
* Type “vi /etc/ld.so.conf”, then hit enter. (vi is a text editor)
* Press the Insert key, then add following locations if not present:
/lib
/usr/bin
/usr/lib
/usr/local/bin
/usr/local/bin
* Press Esc then enter “:wq” (This saves the file, and exits vi)
* Now go to /sbin using cd.
Type “./ldconfig” and hit enter.
Now do as follows:
* Download the below mentioned files (you may get them from elsewhere also):
xine-lib-1.1.1.tar.gz
xvidcore-1.1.0.tar.bz2
libdvdcss-1.2.8.tar.bz2
essential-20050412.tar.bz2
RealPlayer10Gold.tar.gz
Install Instructions:
* Extract the file xine-lib by right click -> extract or through terminal/konsole:
tar -zxvf xine-lib-1.1.1.tar.gz
* In the terminal or konsole go to the folder created i.e., xine-lib/
* Type “./configure“ then press enter. It will check for installed components.
* Type “make“ and hit enter.
* Become root with "su", then type “make install“ and hit enter.
Follow the same procedure as mentioned above for xvidcore and libdvdcss also. Make sure to use "tar -jxvf" for bz2 compressed sources.
* Now extract essential-20050412.tar.bz2 and rename the extracted folder to win32
* As root, copy the win32/ folder in /usr/lib/
* Now for real media files, extract the RealPlayer10Gold.tar.gz file.
* Create a new folder named Real in the extracted folder.
* Now in the terminal or konsole (as root), cd into the extracted folder.
* Type “chmod a+x RealPlayer10GOLD.bin“, and hit enter. (This makes the file executable)
* Type "./RealPlayer10GOLD.bin", then follow the procedures as asked. You can open the real player either by creating a symbolic link to “realplay” (created after installation) or you can run the command as “/home/INSTALLPATH/realplay“ (replace INSTALLPATH by the location where you have installed the player).
Note: There is no playlist option in RealPlayer for Linux.
Now you will be able to play the media files in xine, kaffeine and mp3s in amarok.
